On his latest album Some simple place, Martina Topley-Bird tries to recreate the intimate gig in interpreting unadorned audio titles found on his two (excellent) first records. The result may well be successful, we must absolutely see her perform in the flesh, flanked by his famous multi-instrumentalist sidekick disguised as a ninja to capture the beauty and magic that emanates from his music.

At the scene of a Café de la Danse packed, Martina seems, at first, a little less comfortable than usual, perhaps because of recurring sound problems, or the presence of multiple cameras to capture a video. Fortunately we eventually found the great Martina days, with a record from the bittersweet rhyme to rock the most stripper (terrible version of "Black Steel"), and the icing on the cake, the disarmingly natural with which she addresses the audience in a near-perfect French.

Listening to his bluffing occasions Stranglers (Golden Brown ) and Kate Bush ( Army dreamers ) we say that Martina Topley-Bird is now part of the tradition of the great names of English pop with a world that by its singularity and its wealth has nothing to envy the groups with which she was able to collaborate in the past.

Martina and Ninja conclude their set on a festive note with a balloon launch in the room that will cause a joyful mess, a nice way to end a year full of concerts except for the author of these lines. See you in 2011!

After a slow start the solo career of Brett Anderson seemed to have reached cruising speed with excellent albums out at a steady frequency, accompanied by remarkable concerts (including a moment of pure magic at the Maroquinerie, two years ago ...). It was therefore with some surprise that it welcomed the announcement of the reformation of Sweden in 2010, first for a handful of charity concerts and to tour properly. Brett had he yielded to the call from the bank account? A pressure group of fans, many still in England and other countries further afield, to Asia?
Or was it just a real desire to reconnect with the training provided him with success in the 90s? The trouble is that leaving the concert at the Elysee Montmartre Sweden, jury is still somewhat the motivations of the thing ...

On one side there is of course the pleasure of hearing live the many tubes of the group (if not the hymns) taken with enthusiasm by an audience nostalgic for the heyday of Britpop, even if we deplore a setlist with no real surprises ignoring a number of lesser known pearls. While Brett Anderson seemed to overcome these last years of the rockstar image that clung to the skin, it plunges more than ever today, assuming the role of uninhibited charismatic frontman and excited. Two spots will
however
slightly tarnish the reunion: a sound by the time draft, downright mediocre and the lack of involvement of Neil Codling wearing a haggard during the entire set, contrasting strikingly with the rest of the group .
remains at the sight of mine rejoiced in the room at the end of the (too short) concert, Sweden seems to have won his bid to win back a public meeting always present at the call of the English glam. A bold concept for the era that had not been very convincing, artistically and commercially speaking. 20 years later it is Damon Albarn of Blur paused who wins the jackpot with his Gorillaz and their albums packaged as blockbuster movies. Judging by the audience crowding into a room full to bursting (of rednecks, branches, rednecks trendy, children, their parents, nostalgic Britpop, nostalgic for old school rap, etc etc ...), the old fantasy of the ultimate group capable of uniting all the chapels music does not seem far to materialize.

And the concert in? Well Gorillaz live is like one of those Hollywood blockbusters impressive thanks to a dissipation of resources and a three-star cast. We spent two hours at a good time without a second thought, and you come out satisfied and say that was enough for his money. By cons once in the subway on the way back to his home sweet home , it is likely that you already thinking about something else ...

The Lives of Charles Douglas

is the story of a young fan of the Velvet Underground a little borderline mentally that maintains a correspondence with the legendary Moe Tucker and convinces her to produce his first album. How do you see from this narrative?
